MORE ABOUT DELIVERY AND RETURNS

WHAT IS A DOHAR BLANKET?

Dohar blankets are traditional Indian summer blankets, crafted from 3 layers of superior quality "Mul-Mul" super soft, finely woven cotton.

HOW IS THE DOHAR BLANKET MADE?

Three layers of cotton voile are sewn together with an edging normally in a contrasting colour .

Traditionally the middle layer is hand block printed and the design is visible through the outer layer .

Our Jay Feather collection is slightly different, it has two printed layers on the outside with a natural, unprinted layer of cotton in the middle .

HOW DO I USE A DOHAR BLANKET?

The layers of voile cotton trap cool air in the summer months. Acting as a lightweight coverlet and used in place of a traditional top sheet, it is the perfect companion for an afternoon nap. In the winter months, the blanket's layers trap warm air between the layers, providing warmth and comfort.

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY DOHAR BLANKET?

100% cotton

Machine wash 30 degrees or hand wash.

Tumble dry low heat or line dry.

Do not bleach.

Iron at medium setting.

A TRADITIONAL INDIAN MANUFACTURING PROCESS

We are so proud to show behind the scenes of the slow traditional manufacturing process of our hand made products. It is inspiring to understand the skill, expertise and time required to produce each piece. The collaboration and merging of talents of our designers, the block print and colour masters along with our expert tailors creates our beautiful Dohars, pillow shams, quilts, and kimono robes.

All our products are made from sustainably sourced, pure 100% natural cotton and are hand made in India. Our cotton is washed on arrival to make sure it is clean.

The hand block printing is done by our artisans in a village just outside Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

HAND-BLOCK PRINTED

The technique and artistry of block printing has been passed down through generations and remains essentially unchanged from centuries ago. Precision, time and skill are all required. We use a direct-printing technique, which is ideal for using eco-friendly dyes as it requires less water. You can read in more detail about the magic of block printing here.

Our blocks are all carved in wood by hand, a lengthy, intricate, and tedious process. Some of our designs require several different woodblocks to create our chosen pattern and its movement, building up one layer at a time.

Different colours will also be applied separately, often three or four different layers of printing will be needed to complete the pattern. Once all the layers have been printed, the fabric will be washed and dried again in the sun. Samples of small lengths of fabric are taken to check the print's colour and clarity.

QUALITY CONTROL

Once the fabric processes are completed the fabric is delivered in lengths to our tailors who carefully cut and stitch the cotton into our final designs. Quality control points check everything from colour, size and stitching detailing and quality to make sure that the final product is to our high standards.

This entire production process is dependent upon the weather, we can’t print during the monsoon rains because of the humidity and there are religious ceremonies and social traditions to also consider as well (there are quite a few!)

PRODUCTION WITH INTEGRITY

Together with our production team we are striving to make further improvements to our production sustainability. A lot of thought and effort is going into ensuring that our products are as earth friendly as possible whilst we retain and nurture the artistry and craftsmanship of generations. This is a journey that we are committed to develop as our company grows. The result of all this work is a handmade heirloom worth treasuring and because of its exceptional quality, it will last for many years.
